I'm a bartender in Costa Rica!
I survived, after my first night bartending at Da Monkey. My cousin Danielle and I spent a few days cleaning all the dust off things and making the bar look pretty. Nano, her boyfriend was hesitant to open the bar because our ice machine wasn't working. Dani and I forged a head with the plan and bought a few bags of ice and cases of beer with my loan money. For the past four days we haven't bought anything because both of us were out of spending money. We have been sustaining ourselves on rice and beans and eggs I kid you not for every meal. Yesterday I changed it up a bit and made seaweed soup. That was my lunch, dinner, and now breakfast today!
Anyway so we opened last night at 6pm and I was expecting a slow night. Wrong! We were packed, and I'm running around attempting to make everyone drinks. Luckily everyone wanted a beer or a rum and coke. We ran out of beer at one point and the people of Berlin were not happy. Then we ran out of the local brew Guaro, the next cheapest. Then we ran out of rum, and then we had to get creative. People still wanted to get drunk but didn't know what to drink. I started making vodka sodas, but then we ran out of the cheap stuff and people had to start paying more for the Belvedere and the Greygoose-8 bucks a pop. Jack and cokes were the next popular ones. It was so funny how people didn't even care what they were getting they just asked for more, whatever was cheapest.
I'm finally a bartender, and we had a good start to the season! Now I need a drink.
